If the results of your sleep apnea test show that you have the condition your doctor will start you on a treatment plan. Depending on how serious your condition is this might be as simple as lifestyle changes like losing weight or it may be more complex like surgery. In most cases if your condition is serious enough to require a sleep apnea test your doctor will likely recommend that you start using a CPAP machine.

It is not widely known that there are different types of sleep apnea, far and away the most common is obstructive sleep apnea, this is the one that leads to loud snoring, usually in people who are overweight. However there is also another type of sleep apnea known as central sleep apnea. Even few people know that there are actually different types of central sleep apnea. The most common of these is what is known as idiopathic sleep apnea. Unfortunately the condition is not well understood and nobody really knows what causes it. Obviously this makes treatment a challenge.

What we do know about idiopathic central sleep apnea is that it appears to be caused by a reduction of carbon dioxide in your blood. The apparently causes you to breath at too rapid a rate trying to inhale more carbon dioxide and it leads to a state of hyperventilation. Why this is the case is not clear nor is it understood what causes the reduced levels of carbon dioxide. The good news is that understanding the mechanism of how the condition affects the body does give us something to go on when it comes to treatment.

In the past the way idiopathic central sleep apnea was treated was by using a continuous positive airflow pressure machine. This is a machine that is designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Not surprisingly it was only partially successful since it was designed to treat a completely different condition. Recently experiments have been tried in which idiopathic central sleep apnea was treated by using a bottle of carbon dioxide attached to a mask. The patient would sleep with the mask on and it would increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. This helps to keep them breathing normally. The results of the studies have been good although the treatment is still considered experimental.

One of the biggest issues with treating idiopathic central sleep apnea is simply in determining that you actually have the condition. The symptoms of central sleep apnea and the obstructive type are basically the same. The main symptom is that you stop breathing for brief periods in your sleep. You also tend to feel tired during the day no matter how much you slept. The one big difference is that obstructive sleep apnea almost always leads to snoring while central sleep apnea does not. Unfortunately you can’t really use this as diagnostic tool since there are also lots of people who snore but don’t have apnea at all.

Obviously there is no obstruction in this case but the treatment still works. This is mainly because the air being forced down your airway will pretty much require you to breathe. This apparently overcomes the communication problem with the brain.

Recently there have been some interesting studies done in which carbon dioxide was used as a central sleep apnea treatment. It is believed that one of the causes of the condition is not having enough carbon dioxide in your blood. Why this occurs is unclear but at least it does open doors for treatment options. A mask attached to a bottle of carbon dioxide has been tried in studies and it has proven to be quite successful. The idea is that by breathing in the carbon dioxide you will increase the amount that is in your blood and you will be able to start breathing regularly. This is still a fairly new treatment but it does look promising.

The most likely cause of sleep apnea mask problems is that the machine is not calibrated correctly. The sleep apnea mask works by maintaining a constant air pressure which it blows into your airway to keep it from becoming obstructed. The problem that comes up occasionally is that the machine is not calibrated in the way that it should be. Each person will need the machine set for a different pressure and if it isn’t set right you will either get too little air in which case the machine won’t prevent your symptoms, or too much air in which case you will likely have a bloated stomach. You will need to talk to your doctor about having the machine adjusted if this is the problem.

The other likely cause of sleep apnea mask problems is that the mask itself does not fit properly. The mask needs to be comfortable since you do have to be able to sleep in it. The mask also needs to form a tight seal so that the right amount of air enters your airway. You may have to try several different masks to get one that fits properly. This is something that you want to take your time with. Do not settle for a mask that doesn’t fit quite right, keep looking until you find one that actually fits you properly.

There are some other sleep apnea mask problems that occasionally come up as well. The main one is that you become stuffed up because of all the mucus in your nose. This happens because your body likes moist air, this is why you have mucus in the first place it adds moisture to the dry air entering your nose. The problem is that when you use a sleep apnea mask the air is very dry and this causes your body to produce excess mucus to deal with it. The best thing to do here is to have a humidifier added to your machine.

Some people find that they just have difficulty in breathing through their nose, either because of allergies or a deviated septum. This can be a problem since the sleep apnea mask works best when the air goes through your nose. It is possible to get a machine that covers your mouth as well but this is very uncomfortable and less effective. It is usually best to deal with your allergies with medication so that you can use the regular mask. If you have a deviated septum you may want to consider surgery as a way to address the problem.
