Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when your airway becomes partially blocked so that you can’t breathe properly while you are sleeping. It can lead to a number of serious health issues so it is a good idea to get it taken care of. That means that you need to be able to recognize the obstructive sleep apnea symptoms. This can be a challenge since few of them are definitive.
The most surefire way to spot obstructive sleep apnea symptoms is with a sleep study. This is where you will spend the night at a sleep clinic so that they can watch you while you sleep. This will allow them to monitor your breathing so that they can see if it stops during the night. The only way to tell for sure if you have the condition is if this happens. That being said if you have a partner who you sleep with there is a good chance that they will be able to spot it as well since you will normally wake up gasping or choking when you do stop breathing. In most cases you won’t be fully roused from your slumber so you likely won’t realize that it is happening on your own.
The obstructive sleep apnea symptom that most people recognize is snoring. In most cases if people snore they will know about it. This is especially true if you have sleep apnea since your snoring will likely be very loud and very frequent. Certainly somebody will point it out to you. That being said you do have to be aware that snoring in itself does not mean that you have obstructive sleep apnea. There are lots of people who snore and don’t have the condition so you are going to want to look for other obstructive sleep apnea symptoms.
One of the most common obstructive sleep apnea symptoms is a feeling that you are sleepy during the day even though you don’t quite know why. In most cases people with sleep apnea will get plenty of sleep but it won’t be restful sleep. This is because of the periods where you stop breathing during your sleep. Even though they don’t wake you up fully they will wake you up enough that it prevents you from getting deep sleep. The result is that you are not refreshed when you wake up and you feel tired during the day.
There are lots of other symptoms that are related to sleep apnea however all of them could also be caused by other things so you are going to have to look for multiple obstructive sleep apnea symptoms. Some of these can include being overweight, having trouble with concentration or memory, being irritable or having to go to the bathroom frequently at night. All of these could be indicators that you have sleep apnea or they could be something else, either way it is a good idea to talk about them with your doctor.
